Local 870 Board Attends Region One Conference

gravestone of Samuel Gompers

The Local 870 Executive Board recently had the privilege of attending the Region One Conference held in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Throughout the conference, we participated in informative workshops designed to strengthen our skills in standing up for and representing our members effectively.

In our downtime, we explored the historic town, visiting landmarks such as the Old Dutch Church and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. We even took part in a nighttime walking tour by kerosene lanterns, hoping to catch a glimpse of the legendary Headless Horseman. Along the way, we learned about pioneering industrial figures like the Rockefellers and Wells Fargo.

To our great surprise, the last grave we visited and the most memorable of the night was the grave of Samuel Gompers. The guide proudly told us that Samuel Gompers was the founder of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), which evolved into today’s AFL-CIO. His tireless fight for workers’ rights and his courage to stand against powerful industrialists like the Rockefellers and Wells Fargo paved the way for the labor movement we continue to build today.

Honoring Samuel Gompers’ legacy was the perfect conclusion to our trip, reminding us of the importance of carrying forward his work—100+ years after his passing. We, as union members and leaders, are proud to continue the fight for labor rights.
